At Alice House, we are constantly inspired by the dedication and passion of our supporters. Recently, three remarkable women — Paula Langille, Maria Barreiro, and Tanya Colbo — shared their incredible experiences from the November 2023 Royal LePage Shelter Foundation Challenge Trek in Ecuador. Alongside 120 others Royal LePage agents from across Canada, they raised funds for National Prevention efforts and for local women’s shelters and transition housing charities, including Alice House.

Leading up to their 5-day long hike towards the base of Mt. Cotopaxi —  which included a summit of Mt. Pasochoa, an extinct volcano located in the Guayllabamba river basin in the Ecuadorian Andes —  Paula, Maria, and Tanya raised $28,243 for Alice House, which has an incredible impact on our ability to safely house Nova Scotian women and children healing from intimate partner violence. Their stories are a testament to the power of community, perseverance, and the impact of our collective efforts to support women and children fleeing domestic violence.

Paula Langille has been a REALTOR®  with Royal LePage Atlantic for 15 years and has been involved with the Shelter Foundation for the same duration, dedicating 11 years specifically to Alice House. She is a mother of three and a seasoned trekker, having participated in previous Royal LePage Shelter Foundation treks to Machu Picchu, Iceland, and the Sahara Desert. Paula said, "For me, the motivation is having the opportunity to make a difference while challenging myself and stepping out of my comfort zone with like-minded colleagues from across Canada."

Maria Barreiro began her real estate career in 2013 and joined Royal LePage Atlantic in 2015. Since then, she has actively supported the Shelter Foundation and Alice House through various fundraising events. Maria's goal was to complete a trek after first learning about the opportunities in 2013, driven by her understanding of the importance of a safe home for everyone. "As a REALTOR®, I see how important housing is to each and every one of us every single day and more important than housing is a safe place to call home," Maria shared.

Tanya Colbo has been with Royal LePage Atlantic for nine years and a Commission Donor for eight. As a board member of Alice House from 2019-2024, Tanya been an active advocate for the cause. Her decision to join the trek was fueled by a desire to raise awareness and funds for domestic violence victims and to challenge herself physically and mentally. Tanya reflected, "I've always been interested in doing the trek, as domestic violence is a cause that is extremely personal to me."

The Trek Experience

The trek to Ecuador presented numerous challenges, from high altitudes to unpredictable weather. Each day brought a new test of endurance and determination. Paula recalled summiting Mt. Pasochoa at 4,200 meters, describing the breathtaking views of surrounding volcanoes and mountains. Despite the harsh weather conditions, the team’s camaraderie and support helped them persevere. Paula vividly described the moment: "The sun was hot, and the scenery was absolutely beautiful and as you did a 360 at the top of the mountain, you were gazing upon volcano after volcano, mountain after mountain."

Maria found the altitude to be the most significant physical challenge. She emphasized the importance of taking it step by step, supported by the encouragement of her fellow trekkers. "When it became challenging, that's when I really had to dig deep and remember why we were there," Maria noted. The most impactful moments for her were hearing stories from survivors of domestic violence and realizing the profound difference their efforts were making.

For Tanya, the trek was both a physical and emotional journey. She faced the personal challenge of worrying about her daughter, who was hospitalized just before the trek began. Luckily, Tanya was able to contact her daughter who encouraged her to persevere onwards. Tanya’s determination and the support from her trek mates saw her through to the summit of Mt. Pasochoa, where she experienced a powerful and life-changing moment. Tanya shared, "The most memorable moment was definitely making it to the top of the Pasochoa Volcano. It seemed impossible, but with help from my trekmates, I was able to make it to the top. I bawled when I finally summitted."

Fundraising Achievements

The 2023 Royal LePage Shelter Foundation Challenge Trek was a monumental success in terms of fundraising. Paula highlighted the collective effort of 120 Royal LePage Agents from across Canada that led to raising over $1.7 million. She expressed, "When it hit $1M, we were all blown away, but when the trek was finished, and we were at $1.7M – wow! It was an emotional and incredible feeling of gratitude." Individual achievements contributed significantly. Paula herself raised $11,513, with 80% going directly to Alice House. Maria raised $12,235 total, while Tanya celebrated reaching the $11,556 mark with the help of family, friends, and clients.

Lessons Learned and Advice for Others

The trek taught Paula, Maria, and Tanya valuable life lessons. Paula learned that pushing beyond comfort zones allows for overcoming any challenge. "You can do hard things. Pushing yourself out of your comfort zone, you learn that you can overcome any challenge," Paula advised. Maria’s journey reinforced the power of gratitude and perseverance. "Just an overall amount of gratitude and a reminder that you can do anything you put your mind to," Maria reflected. Tanya’s experience highlighted the importance of perspective, reminding her that there are always others facing greater hardships. "That no matter how hard life seems, there are always people who have it so much harder," Tanya said.

For those interested in getting involved with Alice House, the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation, or another organization serving survivors of domestic violence, Paula advises jumping in, whether through volunteering, donating, or joining a committee, saying “There’s lots you can do and you’ll feel good knowing that you’re making a difference.” Maria emphasizes the impact of helping others and the personal fulfillment it brings. "If you have the capacity to help, do it. You won't regret it and it will have a profound impact on a lot of people, including yourself," Maria urged. Tanya stresses the importance of commitment and preparation for those considering participating in future treks. "Make sure you are super committed. It is hard, but it will change your life in such a positive way if you are ready," she advised.

Conclusion

Each of these women has a deep connection to Alice House and its mission. Paula’s involvement began in 2013, and she has since been a staunch advocate, moved by the success stories of women who have never returned to their abusers with the support of Alice House programs. "Alice House holds a special place in my heart," Paula said. Maria is proud to support Alice House, knowing the dedication of its staff and volunteers. "I'm honoured to help support Alice House," Maria stated. Tanya’s commitment as a former board member, donor, and trekker demonstrates her unwavering support for the cause.

The dedication of Paula, Maria, and Tanya, along with the support of donors, has made a significant difference in the lives of many.
